Abstract:

Entrepreneurship has become increasingly important for innovations and economic development. However, there is scant literature that examines the role of information and communication technology (ICT) in entrepreneurship. By integrating resource-based theory and social capital theory, we develop a research model to explain the direct effects of ICT (ICT access at the regional level and ICT use at the individual level), as well as the interactive effects of ICT with two types of social capital, i.e., political capital and guanxi (Chinese for relationships or networking). Using two matched large-scale datasets from China, we found significant direct effects of ICT at both the regional level and individual level. All the interactive effects, except the one between ICT use and political capital, were also significant. The study provides a complementary view of IT capability and social capital to explain entrepreneurship.
