Cultivation goals:

System engineering program, making the each kind of system as its major research object, pays attention to frontier research fields, together with social economic system and engineering technology system. This program is featuring overall situation orientation, combination of softwares and hardwares, emphasis of practice and integration, and its goals are to cultivate senior technical and management talents with strong practical working ability who could have sold engineering theory foundation, master many technical means and tools, and engage in system planning, design, control and management, complicated decision analysis, as well as design and development of computer application system.

1.Profile of discipline

The discipline of system engineering in Tianjin University, started in 1978, is one of the units to launch system engineering teaching and scientific research, and also one of the first batch national key disciplines, master and doctor degree authorization units. System engineering program, making the each kind of system as its major research object, cultivates senior technical and management talents with overall situation orientation, combination of softwares and hardwares, emphasis of practice and integration.

System engineering program is based on Institute of System Engineering in Tianjin University, which was established in 1978. It is one of the five institutes approved by Ministry of Education to engage in system engineering teaching and scientific research, and is also one of the units to launch research in system engineering field in China. Professor Bao Liu, as the founder and the first director, is the expert of automatical control and system engineering. The institute now has 9 professors, 6 associate professors, 1 winner of National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars, 6 new-century” outstanding talents of Ministry of Education.

Since its birth, system engineering discipline in Tianjin University puts its emphasis on each kind of social economic system and engineering technical system, makes deep research in control system, information system, system simulation, system optimization, theory of large scale system, prediction and decision, evaluation method and others, and gets many remarkable scientific research achievements in macro economy, energy, environment, education, technology, finance, traffic, enterprise management and other fields. For more than three decades, it has still maintained high research level and academic reputation, established a complete system of research system, and covered three major aspects including theory research of system engineering, research of system engineering method and management application of system engineering. This discipline has emphasis on exploration of new frontier research fields, social economic system and engineering technical system. It is to cultivate comprehensive talents who have higher theoretical abilities, master many technical means and tool, and possess strong actual working ability. Thus, the discipline has its own feature in China’s peers.

3. major programs and achievements of scientific research in recent years

The institute of system engineering has got high-level symbolic achievements in macro economy, energy, education, technology, traffic, finance, information management and other fields, obtained outstanding social and economic benefits, and won more than 40 prizes of national and provincial Science and Technology Progress, which have laid academic foundation of Institute of System Engineering in international and national peers.

In recent years, the full-time tutors of system engineering tutors have shouldered and completed more than 100 scientific research programs internationally and nationally, and actively launched development and cooperation of scientific research with enterprises and public institutions. The system engineering program has organized many entrusted development programs, and many achievements of scientific research have been applied to governmental organs, financial institutions and their management sectors, each kind of business enterprises and non-profit organizations, which have created remarkable social and economic benefits. At present, it has more than ten scientific research programs nationally, and the total expenditure is more than RMB 3 million (the expenditure is used annually by more than RMB 1million); moreover, from 2009 to 2011, SCI, EI and other international retrieval systems have included more than 60 publications.
