Dr. Hui Zhao is an Associate Professor of Supply Chain Management and Charles and Lilian Binder Faculty Fellow at the Smeal College of Business at the Penn State University. Her research focuses on collaboration in decentralized supply chains, information sharing, and supply chain contracting. Most of her recent work has been in the area of pharmaceutical and healthcare supply chains. As one of the early researchers into the pharmaceutical supply chain area, Zhao has conducted extensive research including Fee-for-service contracts and information sharing in pharmaceutical distribution, capacity planning and outsourcing for pharmaceutical manufacturing, drug shortage, drug innovation policy/regulations, specialty drugs investment and distribution strategies, online pharmacies, and cost effectiveness of health procedures. Zhao’s research has appeared in top journals such as Management Science, Operations Research, MSOM, POMS, Naval Research Logistics, IIE Transaction on Healthcare, and EJOR. She has written invited chapters on pharmaceutical and healthcare supply chains for two books (published by SIAM and John Wiley & Sons, respectively). She has worked with companies like Caterpillar, Proctor and Gamble, and top pharmaceutical/analytics companies such as AmerisourceBurgen, CVS, IntegriChain. In 2016, she has founded Pharmaceutical Research Focus group at Penn State which aims at bridging the pharmaceutical/healthcare industry with academic research. Zhao has presented her work not only at numerous academic conference sessions, but also at industry forums and government agencies. In 2014, she and her coauthor were invited to present their work on US drug shortage at the US Department of Health and Human Services and FDA in Washington DC. In 2015, this work was a finalist in the prestigious Pierskalla Award organized by the Health Applications Society at INFORMS. In addition, her work on the impact of overbooking was also selected as a featured article of IIE Magazine in Oct. 2013 sent to all IIE society members including industry practitioners. Prior to joining the faculty of Smeal, Zhao had been on faculty with Krannert School of Management at Purdue University. Zhao has taught extensively on topics such as business analytics, supply chain analytics, quantitative business decision making, and healthcare supply chains at the undergraduate, MBA, and PhD levels. She is also the phd coordinator of the Supply chain and Information System Department at Smeal College of Business.
